A Look Back at the Early Life of the 46th President of the United States

A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as the 47th vice president from 2009 to 2017 under President Barack Obama.

Joe Biden was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on November 20, 1942. He was the eldest of four children born to Joseph R. Biden Sr., a used car salesman, and Catherine Eugenia "Jean" Finnegan Biden. Biden's father was of Irish descent, and his mother was of Irish and English ancestry. Biden has said that he was raised in a "working-class, Irish Catholic" family.

Biden attended St. Paul's School in Scranton and Archmere Academy in Claymont, Delaware. He then went on to the University of Delaware, where he earned a bachelor's degree in history and political science in 1968. After graduating from college, Biden worked as a public defender in Wilmington, Delaware. He also served on the New Castle County Council from 1970 to 1972.

In 1972, Biden was elected to the United States Senate from Delaware. He was the youngest senator at the time, at the age of 29. Biden served in the Senate for 36 years, from 1973 to 2009. During his time in the Senate, Biden was a member of the Judiciary Committee, the Foreign Relations Committee, and the Finance Committee. He also served as the chairman of the Judiciary Committee from 1987 to 1995.

In 2008, Biden was elected as the vice president of the United States under President Barack Obama. He served as vice president for two terms, from 2009 to 2017. As vice president, Biden played a key role in Obama's domestic and foreign policy agendas. He also led the Obama administration's efforts to address gun violence and climate change.

In 2016, Biden announced that he would not be running for president in 2020. However, in 2019, he announced that he would be running for president in 2020. Biden won the Democratic nomination in 2020 and went on to defeat incumbent President Donald Trump in the general election. Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States on January 20, 2021.
